Q: After FUE hair Transplant, what postoperative care should I take? what do I need to know?

Q: How to take care after hair transplant? What special care should be taken after FUE hair transplant?

Q: What precautions and medications to be taken after hair transplant?

Q: When can I see the results after hair transplant?

A: The following is the explanation to your queries:

Different Doctors have different opinions and recommendations for postoperative Fue patients to follow. However, the principles are nearly same.

Dr.Feroz Khan of Darling Roots Fue Hair Transplant Clinic says:

As we, all know FUE Hair transplant is less invasive and has fewer limitations than traditional strip method.

Darling Roots Clinic calls the patients the next day for bandage removal. To the donor area, an intensive moisturizing cream will be applied and the recipient area sprayed with 0.9% saline. (At home, this should be continued as guided) We guide them how to wear cap and as to how headbath should be taken for the first 5 days. He should dilute the shampoo in the mug, and then just tap on the recipient area and use mild warm water by keeping hand above the scalp so that the water should flow in between fingers without any pressure, showerhead usage be avoided for 2 weeks, just to avoid water pressure to the recipient area. After shower let the scalp dry by itself.

Postoperative day one, it is adviced that you sleep with head above heart level, in a semi sitting position, using two or three pillowes with a clean towel on it, as some fluid will be oozing from the donor site. Sleeping in this position will help in decreasing the swelling which is about to come from the procedure. No bending, no lifting weights etc

Fue hair transplant is a delicate procedure so the first week postoperative one should be very cautious. No exercise (no sweating), should not be exposed to heat or cold and better if he sleeps head above the heart level to alleviate the swelling.

Postoperative scalp requires daily head wash to keep the recipient and the donor area free of scabs and crusts. It is adviced not to rush in removing the scabs. We recommend cutting the fingernails and washing the scalp gently by using the pulp of fingers. By repeating this daily or twice daily, all scabs and crusts will be cleared without fear of losing the follicular grafts within a matter of 2 weeks. Secondly, the use a Q-tip (Ear buds) by dipping it into shampoo and rolling it on scabs / crusts will help in removing them without dislodging. Drink juices and extra water avoid extra sugar / salt, eat healthy food.  From third day onwards: Apply ice / ice-pack on center of forehead and move towards ears, every two hours for couple of minutes for 2 days to alleviate the swelling.

Wear a cap as directed from front backwards, and avoid dust, pollution and contaminated hands from touching. If there is any itching no scratching please. Be careful while entering car. Avoid alcohol and smoking for the first few weeks after the surgery.

Avoid blood thinners e.g aspirin for three days after the surgery.

No swimming for the first three weeks after surgery until your scalp is completely healed.

The patient can dye his hair after 3 weeks.

Q: Losing hair / grafts along with scabs/crust after 6 days of FUE procedure. Is that normal? If not what corrective measures shall be taken.

A: Losing hair with attached muscle after couple of showers is normal. We at Darling Roots use implanting pens so it is not that easy for the deep-seated hair bulbs (that grow new hair) to come out. Basically speaking, the little hair with attached muscle after implantation, have to fall off giving way for the new hair to grow.
